Erick Luna, Vice President and Senior Project Manager in a screen shirt printing workshop

At BLS Painting, we believe that true craftsmanship isn't just about the finish on a wall; it’s about the foundation of the community we serve. While my days are typically spent overseeing high-end residential transformations in Austin’s most prestigious neighborhoods, this past year offered me a unique opportunity to apply my professional background in a completely different "job site", the classroom.

In the fall of 2026, I had the privilege of volunteering at San Juan Diego Catholic High School. My goal was simple but ambitious: to take my years of experience and multiple degrees, including a Bachelor’s in Business Management and Associate’s degrees in Accounting, Marketing, and Construction Management, and empower the next generation of Austin’s leaders.

Transforming Potential into Professionalism

Teaching high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors isn't just about passing on facts; it’s about creating systems that allow ideas to flourish. At BLS Painting, we pride ourselves on exceptional attention to detail, and I wanted to bring that same standard of excellence to these students.

We didn't just talk about business theory; we built a business. Together, we launched South First Uniforms, a student-run shirt printing company. The objective wasn't just to make shirts, it was to master the "Quiet Luxury" of a well-run operation.

The South First Uniforms Curriculum: Building a Legacy

To run a successful business, whether it's a high-end painting service or a textile startup, you need more than just a good product. You need technical competence and administrative rigor.

Throughout the semester, I guided my students through the same professional systems we use every day at BLS Painting:

  • Sourcing and Operations: Students learned to find quality materials that met professional standards, ensuring that every product reflected the brand’s commitment to quality.
  • Financial Literacy: We delved deep into the "bones" of business. Sophomores and seniors alike learned to manage Accounts Receivable (AR) and Accounts Payable (AP).
  • The Power of Paperwork: My students created real estimates and invoices, learning that clear communication and transparent billing are the hallmarks of a trusted partner.
  • Analyzing the Metrics: We moved beyond simple math to understand the Balance Sheet and how to read an Income Statement. These are the tools that separate a "hobby" from a sustainable enterprise.

The Reward of the "Click"

There is a specific moment in project management, and in teaching, where the complex suddenly becomes clear. Seeing the "ideas and processes click" for these students was incredibly rewarding. They weren't just following instructions; they were taking ownership.

One of the highlights of the semester was watching the students prepare for and present their new ideas to the school administration, who served as our "Management Board." They walked into those meetings with the confidence of seasoned professionals, armed with data, marketing strategies, and operational plans.

Why Professional Systems Matter for Your Home

You might wonder how teaching teenagers to print shirts relates to the custom painting of your estate. The answer lies in the professionalism of the process.

The same accounting precision I taught at San Juan Diego is what ensures our estimates at BLS Painting are accurate and fair. The same marketing and social media strategies the students utilized are what help us maintain clear, consistent communication with our clients.

When you choose Erick Luna, Vice President and Senior Project Manager, and the BLS Painting team, you aren't just getting a painter; you are getting a management team that values:

  • Strategic Planning: Ensuring your project timeline is respected and efficient.
  • Technical Expertise: Utilizing high-quality, low-VOC materials and meticulous application techniques.
  • Local Accountability: As a family-owned business since 1995, our reputation in the Austin community is our most valuable asset.

A Bittersweet Departure

As the semester drew to a close, I found myself in a position many business owners recognize: the need to balance passion projects with the demands of a growing company. With the workload at BLS Painting increasing, I had to step back from my volunteer position to ensure our clients continued to receive the undivided attention they deserve.

While my time in the classroom has paused, the lessons remain. Working with the teenagers at San Juan Diego Catholic High School is something I will never forget. It reinforced my belief that when you provide people, whether they are students or craftsmen, with the right systems and the right mentorship, the results are always transformative.
